Chapter meeting

The next meeting of the Reforma Midwest chapter will be held at the Cicero Public Library on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. The Cicero Public Library is located at 5225 W. Cermak Rd.

The topics of discussion will be members' experiences at the Guadalajara Book Fair and ideas and plans for El Día de los Niños.

Reforma Midwest Chapter meeting

The next meeting of the Reforma Midwest chapter will be held at the Northlake Public Library on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. The Northlake Public Library recently expanded and we will tour their new facility, which is located at 231 N. Wolf Rd.

The topic of discussion will be the state of Spanish Language collections. Leading the discussion will be Todd Quesada of the Melrose Park Public Library and author of the article "Spanish Spoken Here" in the November 2007 issue of American Libraries. Attendees are invited to bring their favorite items from their Spanish language collections to show and tell.

The next meeting of the Reforma Midwest chapter will be held on Wednesday, August 1, 2007, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Metropolitan Library System's Burr Ridge office. If you would like to confirm your attendance, you may register online.

The main topic of discussion will be the Guadalajara Book Fair. Anyone who is attending the fair for the first time who would like some advice from fair veterans is encouraged to attend. Nonmembers are always welcome.

Welcome to the new Reforma Midwest blog from your chapter president, Patricia Conroy. I have started migrating the meeting notes from the website and will slowly be reposting all of them here.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, April 7, 2006, from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the Metropolitan Library System's Burr Ridge office, see directions here. Nonmembers are welcome.

The Midwest Chapter of REFORMA had a continuing education workshop and meeting at the Northlake Library in Northlake Illinois. Patricia Conroy, Vice President of the Midwest Chapter invited representatives from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights to talk to librarians on how to help patrons with their immigration questions. Then the group received a tour of the Northlake Library presented by Jan Schumdde.

Vita Ciraulo and Maritza Ruiz represented the Midwest Chapter of REFORMA in an outreach and educational program for librarians in Southern Illinois. Vita Ciraulo also invited Salvador Vergara, librarian from the Spanish government run library, Instituto Cervantes in Chicago. The event was called, Diversity Forum 2005: Developing a Cooperative Vision for Services to Diverse Populations. It was sponsored by Lincoln Trail Libraries System in Urbana, Illinois. At that program Vita Ciraulo and Maritza Ruiz presented to the librarians examples of how they serve their community’s Latino populations. Both ladies discussed how they marketed library services to their Spanish speaking patrons, applied for special grants for this group, described Spanish and bilingual adult and Children’s programs and how both wore the hat of translators for Spanish speaking patrons who came to the library. Salvador Vergara described the Instituto Cervantes library services and unique Spanish language collection.

The Midwest Chapter of REFORMA Vice President Patrica Conroy organized and moderated a career panel of librarians working with Spanish-speaking patrons for MLS students at Dominican University. The panel included the following speakers: Lourdes Mordini, Adult Services manager at Waukegan Public Library; Carmen L. Gray Markham, Spectrum Scholarship winner and Adult Services librarian at Glenview Public Library; Dr. William Jackson, Professor, Dominican University; Salvador Vergara, librarian at the Instituto Cervantes Library in Chicago; Tracie D. Hall, Director of the Office for Diversity at ALA; and Jan Schumudde, Director of the Northlake Public Library.

Highlights of the business meeting: Patricia Conroy and Vita Ciraulo made plans for representing Reforma Midwest at the VOCES Conference on Literacy, Culture and Identity Book Fair and Table Exhibit. This event was held on November 20, 2004 at DePaul University.

Midwest Chapter of REFORMA organized a workshop at the Aurora Public Library for librarians to share information on positive and negative experiences with programs reaching out to their Spanish-speaking patrons. Vita Ciraulo shared information about bilingual publicity flyers, media contacts, performers, bilingual storytimes, early literacy and family literacy programs she has been a part of creating and presenting to local area Spanish-speaking patrons. She then passed out copies and a binder of examples for the group to review. Next, others at the meeting shared their experiences and needs for resources on this topic. For example, Becky Tatar of the Aurora Public Library, discussed how she keeps local high schools aware of new books that are catalogued in Spanish with a bibliography. A librarian from Berwyn shared information about her library's English learning literacy computer station that contains the Rosetta Stone program and her ESL book group program for low level English speaking adults. Patricia Conroy shared information about her ESL family game nights.

Highlights of the business meeting: The group discussed new membership dues procedures, the need to do outreach to librarians in Wisconsin, Indiana and southern Illinois and then, finally, proofread the changes to the website. Vita announced that if the group wanted to send her suggestions of websites and other information pertinent for the website to please send it to her by November 14, 2004.

Midwest Chapter of REFORMA organized a workshop at the Aurora Public Library for librarians to view two Spanish online database vendors. Gale Thompson Company representatives presented information on their products called Informe and Consulta. An EBSCO Company representative presented information about their Spanish medical information database.

Highlights of the business meeting: Martiza Ruiz, Alsip-Merrionette adult services librarian, is voted in as the new treasurer of the Midwest Chapter of REFORMA. The group is informed that all membership applications will now go to Maritza Ruiz to be processed and sent to National REFORMA headquarters office. Vita Ciraulo presented first draft of the new website. The group proofread the website content and discussed changes to be corrected. Patricia Conroy announced to the group that they should not pass up the chance to apply for the ALA Free Pass Program tothe Guadalajara Book Fair in Mexico. Vita Ciraulo announced that the next meeting will be held sometime in September 2004.

Midwest Chapter organized a field trip for local Chicagoland Librarians to visit the Mexican Fine Arts Museum and the Girón Book Warehouse in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago.

Highlights of the business meeting: Patricia Conroy was voted in as Vice President of the Midwest Chapter of REFORMA. A request was submitted to the Midwest Chapter of REFORMA for the treasurer and secretary position by Vita Ciraulo. Patty Conroy discussed her idea for Midwest Chapter of REFORMA's Tiny Tips newsletter on the Midwest Chapter of REFORMA's listserv. Vita Ciraulo presented to the group the need for a website and that future meetings of the group will be held every 1 - 2 months.
